The holidays are one of the most active and social times of the year for Austinites.  We are lucky to have such great weather year-round, and that means we can spend time both indoors and out at Christmastime.

1.  Armadillo Bazaar

Since 1976, the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar has been a tradition for Austinites searching for the perfect unique gifts for their loved ones.  Austin’s best and brightest artists, craftspeople, and local retailers set up shop for a couple weeks in December to serve more than 40,000 holiday shoppers.  Go check it out!

2.  Blue Genie Art Bazaar

Blue Genie Art Bazaar is another great place to find  one-of-a-kind pieces or art including pottery, jewelry, home goods and more.  More than 140 regional artisans participate, ensuring you’ll find something for everyone on your list at on of the most unique holiday activities in Austin. A portion of the proceeds at Blue Genie Art Bazaar goes to benefit Make-a-Wish Foundation.

3.  Whole Foods Skating Rink

Okay, so it’s not Rockefeller Plaza, but skating on the Plaza at Whole Foods downtown is a family tradition for lots of Austin families.  Eat dinner at the amazing Whole Foods food court, grab a cup of cocoa and head upstairs to watch the kids slip and slide to Christmas carols.

4.   Austin Trail of Lights

One of the coolest FREE holiday activities in Austin at any time of the year, the Trail of Lights turns Zilker Park into a magical wonderland with millions of Christmas lights.  More than a mile of trail is mapped out, with local food vendors, Santa photo ops, and much more.

5.  Texas Holiday Wine Trail

Tour some of the Hill Country’s best wineries, taste their wares and enjoy the cool December air in the breathtaking Texas countryside.  You can stock up on wine for your own cellar, or on holiday gifts for all your wine connoisseur and foodie friends.

6.  Luminations at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Bring two canned food items and get in free for an elegant, magical evening among the twinkling lights at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  There will be children’s activities, wintery concessions, and performances throughout!

7.  Alamo Drafthouse Elf Quote-Along

Take the family to the Alamo Drafthouse Elf Quote-Along and enjoy a tasty dinner and drinks in the Alamo’s famous theater, while sharing a holiday classic with other Elf fans.  Don’t be shy!  Quote along!

8.  Ballet Austin’s The Nutcracker

Another perennial treat!  The Nutcracker performed by our own Ballet Austin is a wonderful tradition, full of light, music, magic and joy.  People of all ages go back year after year to enjoy one of the most memorable performances anyone can see in Austin throughout the year.
